VISITING AND COMMUNITY SCHOLARS

CWaGS Visiting Scholar Program September 2012-April 2013

The University of British Columbia offers a Visiting Scholar Program as an integral part of its Centre for Women's and Gender Studies (CWaGS). Scholars working in these areas are encouraged to apply to spend leave time (one to six months) in affiliation with the Centre. The goal of the Centre is to stimulate feminist research and to facilitate interchange of ideas and collaboration among scholars, at UBC and elsewhere. Scholars will be expected to participate in the activities of the Centre and to give a public lecture during their term.

The Visiting Scholar programme is open to faculty, both untenured and tenured, as well as to independent scholars who are engaged in critical work on women and gender, who are not currently working on a higher degree at any institution and who reside in areas outside the B.C. Lower Mainland. Some funding for travel expenses (to a maximum of $3,000.00 CDN) is available for scholars from "developing" countries. In its selection of visitors, the Centre hopes to create a diverse community of junior and senior scholar-researchers. The Centre is particularly interested in applicants who are situated within existing Women's Studies centres which might be interested in forging future international links.

Scholars will normally be provided with shared office space at the Centre itself, phone, or a computer workstation in the RAGA Centre, and secretarial assistance.
The University's academic year runs from September to April; therefore applicants are encouraged to schedule the majority of their visit to the Centre during these months. Funded visiting scholars must arrange at least part of their visits September-November or January-March.
This program is likely to be of interest to scholars who are on sabbatical.

Applications must include:
· Curriculum vitae
· A detailed statement of research plans for the time period
· The length of stay proposed and the dates
· Estimate of travel costs (for scholars from "developing" countries requesting financial support)

The applicant must also arrange to have two referees forward their assessments to: Visiting Scholar Program, UBC Centre for Women's and Gender Studies, 038-2080 West Mall, Vancouver, B.C., Canada, V6T 1Z2.

The closing date for receipt of applications is December 31, 2011.

CWaGS Community Visitors Program: 2011- 2012

The Centre for Women’s and Gender Studies (CWAGS) at the University of British Columbia has established a Community Visitors Program (CVP) as part of its outreach initiatives. We have partnered with the Liu Institute for Global Issues at UBC to assist community-based and grass roots organizations in local research initiatives that also have a global dimension and can be undertaken using the resources of CWAGS and the Liu Institute at UBC.

The CVP offers wage replacement for up to two-months to free up one staff member in a community-based organization to conduct research. The staff person will be affiliated with CWAGS and the Liu Institute and be able to focus on the development of new programs, the design of new projects, the analysis of current policies or trends, or the preparation of discussion papers for public consumption or policy-makers related to local/global issues of social justice, sustainability, security or other related issues. Recent Community Visitor projects have included:

Women Against Violence Against Women, Deepening the Dialogue on Decriminalization of Prostitution
Vancouver Status of Women, Racialization of Poverty
The Philippine Women Centre of BC, Researching Violence Against Live-in Caregivers
YWCA Legal Educator, The use of Litigation in Custody Disputes
Filipino-Canadian Youth Alliance, Education and Employment Barriers for Filipino Youth

The Community Visitors Program is open to all community organizations working broadly to advance the interests of women, gender equity, and social justice. Preference will be given to groups affiliated with the undergraduate and/or graduate Practicum in Women’s and Gender Studies at U.B.C. The successful applicants will be expected to schedule their time at CWAGS during the 2011-12 academic year (September – November 2011 or January – March 2012). Successful applicants will not be eligible for another CVP award for at least 3 years.

CWAGS works to stimulate feminist research and to facilitate interchange of ideas and collaboration among researchers, students, and communities both locally and globally. The Liu Institute conducts and facilitates research on global issues, focussing on advancing sustainability, security, and social justice: understood as moving towards economic, social, and environmental interactions that promote the well-being of people in ways that are just, equitable and sustainable. Community Visitors will be expected to participate in the activities of CWAGS and the Liu Institute, to provide a workshop at the Liu during their tenure at UBC, and to give a public presentation of their findings at CWAGS during the subsequent university term.

Community Visitors will normally be provided with shared office space at CWAGS itself or a computer workstation in the RAGA Centre (located at CWAGS), the support of a graduate student mentor, and phone and secretarial assistance.

If you would like to discuss potential proposal ideas with the Director of CWAGS prior to submission please contact Gillian Creese (gillian.creese(at)ubc.ca)no later than June 30, 2011.

The deadline for completed applications for the CVP is July 15, 2011. Applications must include:
· A description of the community organization and its mandate (please include past involvement in the WAGS Practicum if applicable)
· A detailed statement of research plans during the tenure of the CVP (please include the global dimensions of the research)
. Identify the need for the research project and how time at CWAGS and the Liu will facilitate the project
. Outline how the research will be used once it is completed
· The dates proposed for research at CWAGS (dates must fall between September–November, 2011 or January–March 2012)
. A detailed budget that includes income-replacement and other research expenses (not to exceed $5000)

Applications should be addressed to Community Visitors Program,  UBC Centre for Women's and Gender Studies, Room 038, Jack Bell Building, 2080 West Mall, Vancouver, B.C., Canada, V6T 1Z2. E-mail applications (sent to jane.charles(at)ubc.ca) are encouraged.

UBC Scholar-in-Residence Program 2010-11

We apologize in advance to our supportive network for being forced to cancel the UBC Scholar program for the time being. Because course buy-outs have now gone into free fall in a number of Faculties and departments our resources cannot keep up. Thus we will not be taking applications for the coming academic year (2010-11). We hope to re-establish this important program in the future.
